Framing

This debate asks whether architecture can produce freedom or whether freedom is extrinsic to built form. Foucault's claim that there is no "architecture of freedom" challenges utopian and emancipatory claims in architecture.

Foucault argued freedom was not a property of any architectural object or space. Liberation must be lived, practiced, and fought for — it cannot be built.
