Earth Alienation

Definition

Earth alienation is Hannah Arendt's term for the modern scientific standpoint achieved by viewing the earth from a cosmic, Archimedean point outside the earth. Beginning with Galileo's telescopic discoveries, modern science achieved "a way to act on the earth and within terrestrial nature as though we dispose of it from outside, from the Archimedean point." Earth alienation enabled tremendous powers (nuclear energy, space travel, genetic engineering) but created a gap between knowledge (mathematical symbols) and human speech/thought. "Earth alienation became and has remained the hallmark of modern science." Unlike world alienation (loss of common world), earth alienation is epistemological and technological—the ability to handle nature from a universal standpoint.
