Donald A. Norman (b. 1935) is an American researcher, professor, and author in the fields of design, usability engineering, and cognitive science. He is one of the founders of the field of cognitive systems engineering and has been influential in establishing user-centered and human-centered design as dominant paradigms. Norman trained as an electrical engineer (MIT) and psychologist (University of Pennsylvania), and his work bridges cognitive psychology and practical design. He has held positions at UC San Diego, Northwestern University, and Apple Computer (where he was a User Experience Architect—the first person to have "User Experience" in his job title). His 1988 book The Psychology of Everyday Things (later retitled The Design of Everyday Things) is a foundational text in design studies and cognitive engineering.
