Till, Jeremy & Wigglesworth, Sarah

Bio Sketch

Jeremy Till is a British architect, educator and architectural theorist (former Head of Central Saint Martins and of the University of Sheffield School of Architecture), known for the "spatial agency" approach and critique of the hero-architect. Sarah Wigglesworth is a British architect (principal of Sarah Wigglesworth Architects) celebrated for the radical self-build house at 9 Stock Orchard Street (the "Straw Bale House," London), co-designed with Till. Together they advocate an architecture open to the everyday, to amateur, lay and collaborative authorship, and to sustainability.

Relevance to Geoffrey's Research

Till & Wigglesworth are key to Geoffrey's vernacular & everyday architecture and authorship interests. Their attack on the "technocracy" of the detail and the master-architect myth corrodes the hero-genius narrative (see the genius-vs-bureaucracy debate) and grounds architecture's ethical opening to the everyday and the amateur.
